Promotes urination and reduces edema

caution Depleted fluids, as in Yin deficiency, dryness, or exhaustion after sweating, vomiting or diarrhea; it drains fluid
caution Swelling of the legs, face or abdomen may point to heart, kidney or liver disease or to a medicine's side effect; new or worsening swelling needs medical assessment rather than self-treatment
pregnancy Herbal use in pregnancy should be supervised by a qualified practitioner; ginger eaten as food is not the same as a water-moving formula

Drug interactions

Prescribed diuretics: a water-moving herbal formula may add to their effect, so check with the prescriber first (theoretical; no clinical study of the combination was found)
Warfarin and other anticoagulants: the evidence concerns ginger in general and is weak and inconsistent; a controlled volunteer study showed no effect on warfarin, while one case report described excessive anticoagulation with phenprocoumon. Patients should mention ginger-containing formulas to their prescriber
