Liver Blood and Kidney Jing deficiency leading to poor or blurred vision, usually coming on gradually with age or long depletion
Dizziness, tinnitus, sore weak lower back and knees
Insomnia with much dreaming; dribbling urination
Tongue pale with a thin white coat; pulse thin, thin and wiry, or thin and frail

Supplements Jing and nourishes Blood to brighten the eyes

Distant objects blurred while near ones stay fairly clear, with squinting to see far
Sometimes blurring at all distances
Floaters and possible flashes or dancing spots
Weak sight in dim light and eyes that tire easily

Myopia from Liver Blood, Kidney Jing and Qi deficiency, with shortness of breath and reluctance to talk: + chu shi zi, + gou qi zi, + wu wei zi, + dang gui, + chuan jiao, + dang shen, + huang qi
Myopia from Liver Blood and Kidney Jing deficiency with Spleen and Stomach disharmony: + chu shi zi, + gou qi zi, + wu wei zi, + dang gui, + chuan jiao, + chen pi
Watering eyes (combined with She Xiang San, sniffed): + wu wei zi, + sha yuan zi
Combined with Jiao San Xian: + shan zha, + shen qu, + mai ya

Cautions

contraindication Not for excess patterns, exterior illness, or excess Heat or Damp-Heat without underlying deficiency
caution Rich, cloying Shu Di Huang may bring on bloating, reduced appetite or loose stools where digestion is weak or damp; if so, adjust with aromatic or Spleen-strengthening herbs instead of pressing on
caution Have the underlying eye condition assessed professionally before use

Preparation

Classically honey pills taken with warm wine on an empty stomach; now more often a decoction
