Actions and indications

Warms Spleen Yang and the Middle Jiao

Yang deficiency with Cold, so that Spleen Qi cannot keep Blood in the vessels
Cold limbs, a pale face and low energy, with no signs of Heat such as thirst, restlessness or a red tongue
Tongue pale with a thin coat; pulse rapid and without force

Stops bleeding

Vomiting of blood, and by later extension blood in the stool or uterine bleeding, from a cold, deficient pattern
Blood that is pale or watery rather than bright red

Cautions

contraindication Bleeding from Heat, shown by bright red or forceful bleeding, a red tongue, a rapid pulse or thirst; the warming herbs make it worse, and a cooling formula is needed instead
caution Gan Jiang or Pao Jiang is best avoided, or used carefully, wherever there are Heat signs
caution Heavy, persistent or unexplained bleeding (vomited blood, blood in the stool, uterine bleeding) should be medically investigated; the formula does not replace that

Preparation

Decoction of the three herbs, often charred to make them more astringent, usually with Pao Jiang in place of Gan Jiang; the original fourth ingredient, fresh horse-dung juice, is now left out
