Modifications

• Severe cough: + xing ren
• Profuse sputum: + chuan bei mu, + tian zhu huang, + pi pa ye
• Bloody sputum with chest pain: + jiang xiang, + ju lou
• Scanty sputum, hard to cough up, from Heat: + bei sha shen, + mai men dong, + pi pa ye
• Nosebleed: + qing hao, + mu dan pi, + bai mao gen, − he zi, − fu hai shi
• Coughing up blood (combined with Yunnan Bai Yao)
• Coughing up blood, Liver Heat severe: + long dan cao, + dai zhe shi
• Coughing up blood, Liver Heat severe, alternative: + san qi fen

Cautions

• contraindication Yin deficiency of Lung and Kidney, as when streaks of blood in the sputum come with night sweats, fever in the afternoon and a thin, rapid pulse
• contraindication Loose stools from weak Spleen Qi
• contraindication Cough from Lung Cold or Wind-Cold, or with thin white phlegm
• caution A cold formula for excess Fire, not for bleeding of a deficient type; its bitter, cold herbs can harm the Spleen and Stomach if taken for long
• caution Coughing up blood, especially heavily or repeatedly, needs prompt medical assessment; the formula does not replace it
• pregnancy Its cold, descending, Blood-level herbs call for professional guidance in pregnancy
