Final stage of a warm-febrile disease in which deep Heat has badly damaged Yin and Blood
Dry mouth and throat, dizziness, ringing in the ears and palpitations
Heat lodged so deep that the limbs are cold (true Heat, false Cold), with a restless, pounding feeling in the chest and at times pain in the heart
Tongue dry and deep red; pulse thin, rapid and without force

Anchors rising Yang and extinguishes internal Wind

Liver Yang floating upward and Liver Wind beginning to stir from Yin and Blood deficiency
In more advanced cases, trembling fingers or the start of spasms

Cautions

contraindication Not suited to exterior conditions, to excess Heat with no underlying deficiency, or to weak digestion
caution Rich, cloying tonics such as E Jiao and Sheng Di Huang, together with the heavy mineral shells, may burden digestion
caution Avoid, or use with care, when Spleen Yang or Stomach Qi is deficient, since it may bring on or worsen loose stools and diarrhea
caution Shells given too short a pre-cooking yield a weaker brew that sits heavily on the stomach
pregnancy Several formula references advise against use in pregnancy; check with a qualified practitioner first

Preparation

Decoction; the three shells go in about half an hour ahead of the other herbs, and E Jiao is melted into the hot liquid after straining
