Rehmannia Root
Sheng Di Huang (生地) is the fresh or dried root of rehmannia, recorded as Radix Rehmanniae. It is sweet and bitter in flavour and cold in temperature, entering the Heart, Liver and Kidney channels. The catalogue files it among the herbs that cool the Blood. The same root after cooking is entered separately as Shu Di Huang.

Deficiency Heat with cough, hematemesis, epistaxis and uterine bleeding
Devastated Yin with Blazing Fire: dry throat, irritability, red tongue and a rapid thready pulse. Ying-stage Heat with extreme thirst, irritability and a scarlet tongue. Swollen throat and lymph nodes. Excess Heat with Yin Deficiency causing constipation
Late-stage Heat at the Ying or Xue level lodged in the Yin areas of the body: fever at night, coolness in the morning, emaciation and a red tongue
