caution E Jiao is rich and sticky and may burden a weak Spleen or sluggish digestion; lower it or change the formula if bloating or loss of appetite follow
pregnancy A pregnant woman who bleeds, cramps or feels the fetus unsettled should be seen quickly by a qualified practitioner; this formula is no substitute for medical care
caution Heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding needs prompt medical assessment

Preparation

Decoction taken warm; E Jiao is melted into the strained hot liquid, not boiled with the other herbs; the original method added some rice wine, now usually water alone
