Cools the Liver and extinguishes Wind

Extreme Heat stirring Liver Wind, as in the severe stage of a febrile disease or Heat at the Blood level of a warm disease
Persistent high fever, thirst, irritability and restlessness
Twitching and spasm of the limbs; in severe cases convulsions with a stiff neck, arching of the back, or loss of consciousness
Severe headache, dizziness and vertigo, ringing in the ears or deafness, bitter taste, dry throat and insomnia
Tongue deep red and dry, or burnt-looking with prickles, with a dry yellow coat; pulse wiry and rapid, or wiry and smooth

Cautions

contraindication Wind of a deficiency type, such as Liver Yang rising from chronic Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency with dizziness, headache and tinnitus but no high fever
caution Convulsions with high fever, unconsciousness, and eclampsia in pregnancy are all emergencies: get urgent medical care
caution Its cold, heavy herbs do not suit patients with Spleen deficiency or Cold unless modified
caution Ling Yang Jiao comes from the critically endangered saiga antelope and is CITES-restricted; goat horn (Shan Yang Jiao), at a much higher dose, is the usual substitute

Preparation

Decoction, drunk warm through the day. The horn is cut into thin shavings or powder and either cooked on its own or mixed into the finished liquid; Gou Teng goes in only for the last minutes of cooking; fresh Zhu Ru may be used
