Tongue deep red with scant or thin coating; pulse thin and rapid

contraindication Wind of an excess type, such as Wind from an acute external attack or Phlegm-Heat stirring Wind, where there is no underlying Yin or Blood deficiency
caution Its rich tonics, E Jiao and Sheng Di Huang in particular, are heavy to digest; watch appetite and stools when the Spleen is weak or Damp
caution With anticoagulant medicines: use only under professional guidance, because of the blood-related action of E Jiao
pregnancy Use in pregnancy only under professional guidance

Preparation

Decoction of the herbs, with the shells cooked first; E Jiao is melted into the strained liquid, and raw egg yolk is stirred in once it is warm rather than boiling
