contraindication Bi with Heat: red, hot, swollen joints, acute inflammatory arthritis, or Bi dominated by Damp-Heat or strong excess
contraindication Bi with Yin deficiency of the Liver and Kidneys, or Yin deficiency with Heat signs such as night sweats, malar flush and a red tongue with scant coat, which the warming Rou Gui and Xi Xin can worsen
pregnancy Use with caution in pregnancy, as Chuan Xiong, Rou Gui and Huai Niu Xi warm and move Blood
caution Xi Xin is under dose limits and sourcing rules in several countries, some allowing only the root, because the aerial parts may contain compounds related to aristolochic acid
caution Back pain that is new or severe, above all with weak or numb legs or altered bladder or bowel control, should be assessed promptly by a doctor; inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis needs a medical diagnosis and disease-modifying drugs
