Combinations

• da zao

  Phlegm stopping Lung Qi from descending, with wheezing, cough with copious sputum, and a full, painful chest; facial edema with a blocked, noisy nose; not for long-term use

• han fang ji + da huang + jiao mu

  Fluid collecting in the chest and abdomen, with facial edema

• da huang + xing ren + mang xiao

  Accumulation causing chest pain with fullness and hardness

• zhi fu zi + huang qi

  Congestive Heart failure.

• contraindication Lung Qi deficiency with cough and wheezing, except when combined with Qi tonics
• contraindication Spleen Qi deficiency with edema, except when combined with Qi tonics
• contraindication Bladder Qi deficiency with urinary difficulty, except when combined with Qi tonics
• pregnancy Contraindicated in pregnancy
• caution Not for long-term use: prolonged use depletes Upright Qi, so stop once the Phlegm-fluid or edema has cleared
• caution Its cold, draining nature can injure Spleen and Stomach Qi; traditionally paired with Da Zao or other herbs that protect the Spleen
• caution A potent herb whose source plants contain cardiac glycosides; use only under practitioner supervision
