About ting li zi

Ting Li Zi (葶苄子) is the seed of either of two crucifers. It is acrid and bitter in flavour and cold in temperature, entering the Lung and Bladder channels. The two species are entered separately as Bei Ting Li Zi and Nan Ting Li Zi.

Actions and indications

Drains the Lungs, expels Phlegm-fluid and calms wheezing

  • Wheezing or cough with copious phlegm rattling in the throat, from Phlegm accumulation or Lung Heat
  • Excess-type cough and breathlessness with thick, profuse phlegm, fullness of the chest and flanks, and being unable to lie flat

Promotes urination and reduces edema

  • Obstructed Qi of the Lungs and Bladder, with puffiness of the face and eyes, or fluid collecting in the chest or abdomen, and difficult urination
  • Generalised edema with scanty urine
