contraindication Never heat, calcine or decoct it, or mix it with hot water: heat turns its arsenic sulfide into the far more toxic arsenic trioxide
caution An arsenic mineral: modern safety literature treats internal use as a serious hazard, and its sale is restricted to prescription in some jurisdictions
caution Serious harm has followed topical use alone, including fatal arsenic poisoning and fatal toxic epidermal necrolysis from realgar ointments
caution Repeated use over many years has been linked to multiple skin cancers
