Cautions

contraindication No clear signs of Heat: the formula is cooling, drying and descending, for an excess Phlegm-Heat pattern
contraindication Dryness or Yin deficiency, including a dry cough with no Phlegm-Heat: the bitter, drying herbs may harm the Yin of the Lungs and Stomach
contraindication Wind-Cold, or Cold-Phlegm and Damp-Cold patterns with thin, white, watery sputum
caution A tendency to loose stools, since Gua Lou Ren is mildly laxative
caution Qi or Spleen deficiency, because Zhi Shi breaks up Qi strongly and the formula can burden a weak Spleen
pregnancy Zhi Shi and Xing Ren break up and descend Qi; use only under professional guidance

Preparation

Classically powdered and formed into pills using fresh ginger juice, swallowed with warm water; granule, tablet and decoction forms are also used
