Cautions

contraindication Bleeding of a Cold or deficient type, usually long-standing and slight, dark or pale in colour, with a pale tongue, cold hands and feet, or a weak, thin pulse

caution Stop as soon as the bleeding stops; once acute bleeding is under control, treatment moves to a formula for the underlying pattern

caution The patient should lie quietly during treatment

caution Vomiting or coughing of blood, or a heavy nosebleed, can signal a serious condition and needs prompt medical assessment; the formula does not replace that

caution Bitter, cold and purgative through Da Huang: it can burden the Spleen and Stomach and cause loose stools or digestive upset, above all when digestion is weak

pregnancy Use in pregnancy only with professional guidance: Da Huang purges, and Mu Dan Pi and Qian Cao Gen move the Blood

Preparation

Each herb is charred on its own, then all are ground to a fine powder; classically stirred into fresh juice of lotus root or white radish, with some ink stick rubbed into it, and taken cold, or bound into pills with the juice. A decoction of the same herbs is now common and is preferred when Fire is more intense
