Cautions

caution He Shou Wu, the chief herb, has been linked to acute and sometimes severe liver injury, including a case with this formula; use only the prepared (steamed) root, never the raw one
caution Check liver function before starting and at intervals when taken long term
contraindication Existing liver disease or raised liver enzymes without a known cause
caution Spleen deficiency: use carefully or not at all, since the rich tonics weigh on a weak Spleen (poor appetite, bloating, loose stools)
contraindication Acute exterior conditions, or marked excess or Damp-Heat patterns
caution With warfarin: Gou Qi Zi has been reported to raise the INR and cause bleeding; monitor clotting if combined
pregnancy Use in pregnancy only under professional guidance

Preparation

Powdered herbs bound with honey into pills and swallowed with warm salted water; black sesame is used to steam He Shou Wu and to dry-fry Bu Gu Zhi beforehand; also sold as granules, capsules and tablets
