Cautions

contraindication Deficiency patterns: not for weak, frail, elderly or chronically ill patients, or where Qi or Yin deficiency rather than true excess is present, since sweating and purging together can quickly exhaust them

contraindication Exterior conditions of a deficient type, where there is already spontaneous sweating, or where fever and constipation are not due to true excess Heat

pregnancy Contraindicated in pregnancy: it contains the strong purgatives Da Huang and Mang Xiao and the Blood-moving Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui

caution Use with care where digestion is sensitive; the combined diaphoretic, purgative and cooling actions can soon damage Qi, fluids and the Spleen and Stomach

caution Contains Ma Huang: take care with high blood pressure or heart conditions

caution With stimulant medicines: avoid the combination, because of the Ma Huang

caution A short-course formula for acute excess Heat, not for prolonged use; stop or modify it once the acute pattern has resolved
