Platycodon Root
Jie Geng (桅梗) is the root of platycodon, the balloon flower, recorded as Radix Platycodonis. It is bitter and acrid in flavour and neutral in temperature, entering the Lung channel alone. The catalogue files it among the herbs that transform Phlegm-Cold.

Opens Lung Qi, expels Phlegm, relieves toxicity and drains pus, for Wind-Heat with a productive cough, a hoarse voice and a swollen, painful throat. Lung abscess with chest and flank pain and coughing up of pus. Excess conditions of the Upper Jiao while the Lower Jiao is unaffected
