caution A harsh, bitter-cold formula for a short course only: once the excess clears, further or repeated use purges and drains too much, harming Spleen and Stomach Qi and body fluids
caution Prolonged use may leave the patient weak, light-headed and without appetite, with palpitations
caution Use with care, or avoid, where the Spleen and Stomach are weak and cold, with poor appetite or loose stools
caution Mu Tong: check the botanical source; some preparations have used Guan Mu Tong (Aristolochia manshuriensis), which contains aristolochic acid, is linked to kidney damage and is restricted or banned in many places
pregnancy Contraindicated in pregnancy (one source allows it only under direct professional supervision); its strong downward purging, notably from Da Huang, puts a pregnancy at risk

Preparation

Classically a coarse powder boiled with slices of fresh ginger and a little Deng Xin Cao and taken warm before meals; now often decocted from whole herbs, with Hua Shi in a cloth bag and Da Huang wine-treated
