Cautions

pregnancy Contraindicated in pregnancy: Da Huang, Tao Ren and Hong Hua carry a risk of miscarriage
contraindication Unsuitable where there is general weakness and deficiency, Blood deficiency with no stasis, or intolerance of purging
caution Use carefully when the Spleen is deficient
caution A strongly moving, purging formula: some looseness of the stools is expected, but if diarrhea becomes excessive, reduce or take out Da Huang, and if diarrhea appears without full recovery, change to a different formula
caution For short-term use in acute injury: stop or adjust it once the stools loosen and the fixed, stabbing pain has eased
caution Significant chest or flank trauma can hide a more serious injury and should also have a medical assessment
caution Chuan Shan Jia (pangolin scale) comes from species placed on CITES Appendix I in 2017 and no longer in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia; current practice leaves it out or uses Wang Bu Liu Xing or Zhu Ti Jia instead

Preparation

Da Huang is fried in wine first, then decocted with the other herbs in water; taken warm in several portions over the day; granule and patent versions often leave out Chuan Shan Jia
