caution Weak digestion or Spleen deficiency, in the frail or elderly, or with loose stools: the purgatives can harm Stomach Qi and bring on loose stools or cramping, so use with care and reduce or remove them
caution Not for Heat from Yin deficiency without excess, such as low afternoon fever with night sweats
caution Short-term use only: stop once the stool passes and the Heat signs settle, so Stomach Qi and fluids are not depleted
pregnancy Contraindicated in pregnancy because of the purgatives Da Huang and Mang Xiao, unless a qualified practitioner directs otherwise

Powder: a dose is boiled a short time with bamboo leaf, strained, mixed with honey and drunk warm; when decocted, Bo He goes in late and Mang Xiao is melted into the finished liquid
