Cautions

contraindication Yin-type (deep-rooted, pale, flat, not hot) sores, and lesions that have already broken open and are draining
caution Weak Spleen and Stomach, or deficient Qi and Blood: use with care, as the bitter, cold and Blood-moving herbs can strain digestion
caution May cause nausea and vomiting
caution For the acute stage only, over a short course, not long-term
caution Chuan Shan Jia (pangolin scale) is from CITES-protected species and is no longer sourced; modern versions leave it out, relying on Zao Jiao Ci, or use Wang Bu Liu Xing instead
pregnancy Blood-moving herbs such as Dang Gui, Ru Xiang, Mo Yao and Chi Shao mean it needs professional guidance in pregnancy

Preparation

Decoction, classically cooked in equal parts water and wine; the resins Ru Xiang and Mo Yao and the aromatic herbs are added late; the cooked herbs may also be applied to the lesion; also made as granules
