contraindication Avoid with Spleen and Stomach deficiency-Cold, loose stools or diarrhea: with no true accumulation, the downward purge of Da Huang and Zhi Shi is inappropriate
contraindication Not for deficiency or Cold patterns; given without a real excess and accumulation it drains Spleen and Stomach Qi for no benefit
caution Stop once the accumulation has cleared; purging beyond the acute stage can injure Stomach Qi
caution Ban Xia must be the processed form; the raw rhizome is toxic and irritating
pregnancy Contains the strong purgative Da Huang; in pregnancy use only under professional guidance

Decoction, taken warm in divided portions; Da Huang goes in late when a stronger purge is wanted, and Ban Xia is used processed; also made as granules or powder
